For me, I’ve observed a subtle change in the public mood of Chinese as they look back at their history. It’s no longer suffused with humiliation and bitterness. Instead there’s much more pure pride, a tendency to offer paeans to what the Chinese have achieved.
This adorable little boy, now 4 years old, thrilled millions of Chinese with his Michael Jackson style street dancing. He has an English nickname, Morning Baby, but his Chinese nickname is cuter: Precious Jr. (XiaoBao, 小宝). He shot into fame when he performed on one popular talent television show, Very 6 +1 (非常6+1), which kind of imitates Britain’s Got Talent and aims to discover grassroots entertainers. This Youku video was apparently an early production as the banner behind bears Very 6+1 logo. Though he was born premature he now weighs 15 kilograms (just double my pet cat’s weight), and is 1 meter tall. He has huge followers online. On his official personal blog, he writes he is a Scorpio, and his profession is Culture/Entertainment/Sports. You won’t be able to help smiling seeing his profile photo in big MJ hat. He simply has that kind of charisma!
At midnight last night we released the announcement that Youku.com has closed a first tranche of an expansion round for $40 million. We timed the funding announcement to coincide with the third anniversary of our nationwide launch back in December 2006. We also got some good coverage from The Wall Street Journal here.
We’ve now passed the “200 million” mark in two major categories: Unique visitors per month (this means that close to two-thirds of Chinese Internet users are now watching video on Youku in a given month) and number of hours streamed in a month. (Actually our internal number for hours streamed is considerably higher than what iResearch has measured, but we’re not going to complain!)
Youku Completes $40 Million First Closing of Expansion Round
BEIJING, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — On the third anniversary of its launch, Youku.com, China’s leading Internet video website, today announced that it has closed US$40 million in private equity funding in a first tranche of a growth financing round.
The round was led by Chengwei Ventures and the first closing was raised entirely from existing investors. Besides Chengwei, those investors include Brookside (Bain) Capital, Maverick Capital, and Sutter Hill Ventures.
Youku is in active discussion with other potential investors over a second tranche of the round, which will raise up to an additional $40 million.
Including the first tranche for the current round, the company has raised $110 million in private equity funding, and $10 million in venture debt.
This latest round of funding will be used to syndicate professional media and produce Web-based content, to further enhance user experience, and on both PC-based and mobile R&D, according to Youku founder and CEO Victor Koo.
“We are honored to have the continued support of our board and our investors,” said Mr. Koo. “We feel this is a vote of confidence in our ability to execute and deliver results over the last three years, and this round of funding will help us to extend and solidify our lead in the market,” he said.
Youku currently works with over 1500 content license-holders to deliver professionally-produced programming. Youku has attracted 350 brand advertisers to date, and the company’s gross revenues for 2009 will surpass RMB 200 million.
“In the year 2009, Youku has cemented a dominant market position and achieved successful monetization,” said Eric Li, managing director of Chengwei Ventures. “We will continue to ensure Youku has the strongest financial resources to maintain and expand its leadership position,” he added.
Youku had 149 million unique visitors accessing the site from home or office PCs and 57 million accessing from Internet cafes during the month of October 2009, according to Shanghai-based Internet research firm iResearch. iResearch also reported that Youku users spent a total of 229 million hours on the site in October.

A tough but definitely inspiring video from grassroots Youku Paike. The title “Miracle of Life” fits this story well. The hero, Peng Shuilin (彭水林), was a disadvantaged migrant worker in Shenzhen when he was run down by a big truck in 2004. Though he survived, he lost his bottom half permanently and now only measures 78cm in height. He was released from the hospital in 2005, and went back to his hometown in Hunan. With the help from Hunan Disabled Persons’ Federation, he opened “Half Body Man Convenience Store” (半截人便利店) in Changsha. He smiles, and is proud to show how he lives his disabled life. He exercises and plays poker with his friends. Behind all these is the sad reality of court’s red-tape and policeman’s irresponsibility. The court sentenced the driver to compensate Mr. Peng 249,000 RMB, which was almost 50,000 RMB less than Mr. Peng’s hospital bills. As of today, Mr. Peng hasn’t received a single penny. The court’s response to this was to say that Mr. Peng should find the driver himself to get the money.

This heart-melting video attracted close to one million viewers in just two days. According to one viewer’s report, the same video was viewed only 150,000 times on YouTube 9 hours before this buzz. Not sure whether the Chinese title given by the uploader helped: It’s hard to bring up a child; aren’t daughters Daddy’s lovers from a past life? With endless Chinese stories about a men betraying their spouses and lovers, it’s a pay-back time. But what a nice way to pay back! There is simply no way for Daddy to sneak out, and in this life he is defenseless before his baby daughter’s “brutal” possessiveness. We love the background music, and love this young Daddy’s facial expressions.

This video is a perfect complement to the demanding baby daughter above, and also came from YouTube. This adorable little Japanese boy plays Ukulele, and makes faces while singing “I’m Yours.” To be a star in this age with overloaded adult-imitators, just be yourself.
